THE WATER IS ALWAYS HERE
Maria collected water from the Thames and applied it directly onto canvas. Its contamination and “weight” blocked intimacy until she responded with protective gestures: layers of soya wax, oil colour, egg tempera, natural blue pigment, and intuitive brushwork—gestures towards ecological grief and towards ancestral weight.
Blue is central in her work, rooted in ancient Greek symbolism and personal myth. It represents protection, transformation, and the sacred, softening inherited pain and opening space for renewal .

The series investigates the transformation of materials through water and color blue.
It all started from Maria’s kitchen sink in London, where she immersed sheets with color in water and observed the gradual effects of drying and transformation. Beginning with toxic black acrylic and later incorporating natural blue pigment, the studies explore dissolution, renewal and care. Drawing on hydrofeminist theory, the works examine fluidity, interconnectedness, and the conceptual potential of water as both medium and framework.
